The formula
DTI = monthly debt payments / gross monthly income x 100. Include rent or mortgage, loans, car payments and minimum card payments.
Example: 1,500 of debt payments on a 5,000 monthly income is a 30% DTI. Many US lenders prefer 36% or lower, and some accept higher for certain loans. Rules differ by lender and country.
