How VAT is worked out
VAT = price x rate / 100. Total = price + VAT. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate / 100).
Example: at the standard 20% rate, £100 plus VAT is £120, and a £100 price that includes VAT was £83.33 before VAT. Some goods have a 5% or 0% rate, so check GOV.UK for the right rate.
