How sales tax is worked out
Tax = price x rate / 100. Total = price + tax. To remove tax from a total, divide by (1 + rate / 100).
Example: $100 at 8.25% adds $8.25, so the total is $108.25. A $100 receipt that already includes 8.25% tax was $92.38 before tax. Rates vary by state, county and city, so check your local rate.
