If you earn $20 an hour and work full time, you make $41,600 a year before tax. That is about $3,467 a month, $1,600 every two weeks and $800 a week. These numbers assume 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

Your real income may differ if you work fewer hours, take unpaid leave or earn overtime. This guide shows the maths, gives you tables for different schedules and links to a free calculator that does the work for you.

How to calculate $20 an hour as a yearly salary

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you are paid:

Yearly pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year

  1. $20 x 40 hours = $800 a week
  2. $800 x 52 weeks = $41,600 a year
  3. $41,600 / 12 = $3,467 a month
  4. $41,600 / 26 = $1,600 per bi-weekly paycheck

$20 an hour for part-time hours

Not everyone works 40 hours. Here is what $20 an hour pays at different weekly schedules, assuming 52 paid weeks:

Hours per weekMonthlyYearly
40$3,467$41,600
35$3,033$36,400
30$2,600$31,200
25$2,167$26,000
20$1,733$20,800

What if you take unpaid time off?

The 52-week figure assumes you are paid every week. Each unpaid 8-hour day costs you $160. Ten unpaid days a year lowers your pay by $1,600, from $41,600 to $40,000. Our calculator has an “unpaid days off” box so you can model this.

Does overtime change the total?

Yes. If you work 5 overtime hours a week at time and a half, you earn $30 an hour for those hours, which adds $150 a week. Over 52 weeks that is $7,800 extra, bringing the year to $49,400.

Overtime rules differ. In the US, most non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. In the UK, overtime pay depends on your contract. Use our overtime pay calculator to test your own hours and multiplier.

$20 an hour in the UK and Europe

The maths is the same in any currency: £20 or €20 an hour full time is 41,600 a year before tax. Many UK full-time jobs are 37.5 hours a week, and at that schedule £20 an hour comes to £39,000 a year. Always check your contracted hours.

Gross pay versus take-home pay

Every figure above is gross pay, meaning before income tax, social insurance, pension contributions and other deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower, and by how much depends on where you live, your filing status or tax code and your benefits.

A common budgeting mistake is planning with gross pay. To estimate your real paycheck, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator in the US or the official tools on GOV.UK in the UK.

Is $20 an hour a good wage?

It depends on the cost of living where you live, your benefits and how steady your hours are. A $20 job with paid leave, health cover and a pension can be worth more than a higher rate with none. To compare offers fairly, convert both to the same basis, and use our salary to hourly calculator to see what a salary works out to per hour.
